Mobile elevated working platforms, serious injuries and death preventive measures
Most of the accidents occur when people are working at height in the construction sites even after focusing to keep safe on ladders and scaffolding. Number of accidents occurs that causes serious injuries and death at mobile elevated areas are high, as recent study says; this shows our lack of knowledge in safety measures that minimizes the risks and hazards at mobile elevated working platforms.
Preventing Mobile Elevated Working Platform Accidents:
The HSE offers specific precaution ideas that can be useful in reducing the risk from Mobile Elevated
Work Platform hazards that includes,
Confined overhead working:
The operator who has the overhead structures is on DANGER. They could be trapped anytime. In
such a case, the operator must select a MEWP that has been designed to prevent that kind of
accidental contact.
Ground conditions:
Leveled ground or firm should be considered as a platform. The selected platform space should be
able to withstand the applied pressure.
Outriggers:
Before raising the platform the outriggers must be extended and chocked and also check the
equipments like spreader plates manually.
Guardrails:
Guard rails and toe boards must be fitted in the work platform in the efficient manner
Preventing falls:
If any risk of people falling from the platform is found, it must be secured with the suitable
manufacturer provided within the basket to stop the wearer from getting into a position where
they could fall from the carrier
Falling objects:
Make a barrier area around a platform so that the falling objects or tools do not strike the people
below.
Weather:
Always set maximum safe wind speed for operation since high winds can tilt platforms and can
make them unstable and storms and snowfalls can also damage the platforms. To avoid this inspect
the platform before and after the severe weather.
Nearby hazards:
Do not operate a Mobile Elevated Working Platform close to overhead cables or other dangerous
machinery.
